DIY Chalkboard Coffee Corner

If you have DIY’ing in your blood, then you know how hard it is to leave even a corner of your house untouched if you have an itch to create something new and fun. That is my hubby and I on a weekly basis!! This project I present to you today is something we’ve talked about for a while now and we finally bit the bullet to knock it out…it is our coffee corner!

Coffee bars are trending like crazy and although I tend to be trend resistant at times…this one I’m all about because #1 I LOVE coffee and #2 I really really like chalkboards/chalkboard walls/etc. In our home, we have this perfect little counter space that only seemed appropriate when we moved in to make our coffee spot. It put that task of getting morning (or all day) caffeine in one spot and the drawer underneath holds all our fixings and supplies for coffee mania! There was really no other logical space in our kitchen or dining area for a full on coffee bar so we decided to make this once drab dark space into our on trend Coffee Corner – and if we do say so ourselves the alliteration just rolls of the tongue!

To start – let’s see a before picture of the space…

Now, the project itself was fairly easy and cheap with just a couple coats of chalkboard paint to the main wall. Then my very handy hubby measured and cut some reclaimed barn wood from our hoarder pile 🙂 and we screwed them into the back wall to add a rustic element under the cabinet.

We had to bring some light into this dark corner and we really had to highlight the now gorgeous barn wood backsplash. So with a quick trip to the local hardware store, we found a 3 pack of little tap lights for $9 that are perfect!  We secured 2 underneath the cabinet and with a quick push of the button, the space becomes the spotlight of the kitchen when it is just a little corner!

The chalk art was a journey to say the least! I’m all about using chalk markers but something to know about them…you must erase what you don’t like within 10 minutes or so or the chalk ink becomes hard to erase. I learned the hard way when I left something to think about and then I couldn’t erase it and had to repaint over that spot! Oops! Learn from my mistakes.
The lettering wasn’t too bad to implement with the many amazing hand lettering templates out there. The coffee berry sprigs were fun to add some organic elements to the wall (because coffee begins as a berry you know – not just a bean like everyone thinks. I decided to add them around our main highlighted portions of The Coffee Corner header and The Brew down lower.

We wanted to have some dimension on the wall in addition to the chalk art. We had these fun colorful hooks from World Market that we hung in the back corner of the corner for His and Her mugs.

And then to highlight The Brew section – I found this killer cool frame with the most amazing metal hanger attached! Isn’t it perfect to go with our rustic flair!?! We removed the glass and wrote inside the brew we currently have brewing.

Lastly, the death of the wall…almost…was deciding what to do in the gap between The Coffee Corner and The Brew. Cups are much harder to draw then you think and about 8 attempts later, we created this cup with a sprinkling of some coffee beans to surround it. Whew and then it was complete!

We really love our little space in the mornings and I hope you are inspired to find a place in your home for a quirky coffee spot – no matter how small you may think it is…it can work!
We now feel like our fun moo cow creamer has a trendier home to graze about! Haha
